Emergency Services Recover Body Following Silt Entrapment
A fishing trip ended in tragedy on Tuesday, July 28, when a local man drowned in a water tank near Humcha, located within Hosanagara taluk. The victim, identified as 30-year-old Mahendra, was a resident of the Humcha area. According to witnesses at the scene, the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. while Mahendra was attempting to fish alongside a group of friends.
Mahendra entered the water with a safety rope secured around his waist, but failed to resurface. Despite the presence of his companions, immediate rescue efforts proved unsuccessful, prompting an urgent call to the Hosanagara Fire and Emergency Services.
Search Divers Cite Hazards at Tank Floor
Fire Officer Anandappa N. led the subsequent recovery mission, deploying a rescue team and a boat to the location. The search concluded when the team successfully retrieved Mahendra's body from the depths of the tank. In a statement to The Hindu, Officer Anandappa explained that the rope tied to the victim’s body served as a vital marker for the divers.
Investigations suggest the victim was hindered by the hazardous conditions beneath the surface. "It appears that he got trapped in shrubs and silt at the bottom of the tank," Anandappa noted, confirming that his staff managed to bring the body to the shore despite these obstacles.
Official Inquiry Launched
Local law enforcement from the Ripponpet police station attended the site to oversee the recovery and document the scene. While the primary cause of death is attributed to entrapment and drowning, authorities have initiated a formal investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
