Security Forces Enter Lockdown Mode After Deadly Riots
Administrative officials in the Koshi province have implemented indefinite restrictive orders across five major market hubs in the Sunsari district. Following a violent night of religious friction, the District Administration Office prohibited all public assemblies of more than four individuals starting at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2026. This ban includes demonstrations, sit-ins, and any form of public meeting until security conditions improve.
Fatal Confrontation in Kaptangunj
The unrest began on the night of Sunday, July 26, 2026, in the Devgunj rural municipality’s Kaptangunj sector. Two separate religious groups, each conducting their own events, entered a verbal dispute regarding the volume of loudspeakers and the placement of religious banners. The situation spiraled out of control, forcing law enforcement to intervene. During the attempt to suppress the violence, security forces discharged firearms.
The casualties from the night include:
- Om Prakash Mehta: A 24-year-old man who was killed by gunfire.
- Security Personnel: Multiple officers were injured while attempting to maintain order.
- Civilians: More than a dozen individuals sustained injuries during the physical clashes.

Sunsari occupies a strategic position as a commercial transit corridor in southeastern Nepal, sharing a direct border with the Indian state of Bihar. Due to the area's economic and social volatility, the local administration warned that transparency and compliance are required. Violators of the current prohibitory orders face immediate legal consequences, which include fines of NPR 500, up to one month in jail, or both penalties simultaneously.
