By performing a comprehensive review of related genera including Acupronotes, Apostenolinus, and Staphylinus, the team mapped the shared derived characteristics that define the Eucibdelus lineage. The Luffy genus represents a critical intermediate stage; while it shares the dorsal ridge teeth found in the Eucibdelus lineage, its labrum is not completely hardened, or sclerotized.

This unique combination of traits suggests that Luffy is the sister group to the entire Eucibdelus lineage. This placement fills a major gap in the classification of the subtribe Staphylinina, providing a clearer look at the historical diversification of these insects. The researchers believe that using creative nomenclature can make the complex world of biological taxonomy more accessible to the public and inspire a new generation to investigate global biodiversity.
