Infrastructure Failure Amid Ongoing Expansion
A 7 to 10-meter section of the approach embankment on National Highway 48 buckled on July 29, 2026, near Nippani in Karnataka’s Belagavi district. The collapse occurred within a construction zone where contractors have been working for over two years to expand the route into a six-lane highway. The site of the damage is specifically identified as the approach to a Light Vehicular Underpass (LVUP) located on the Sankeshwar Bypass, stretching toward the Maharashtra border.
NHAI Technical Assessment and Traffic Status
Following the circulation of images showing the eroded structure by local resident Uday Kinjwadkar, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) issued a formal clarification to address public alarm. Officials from the NHAI Regional Office stated that the failure did not involve the finished main carriageway. According to the agency, Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) was not yet installed; the site was still at the sub-grade level with only partial Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) application.
Technical investigators attributed the structural localized failure to intense precipitation. Several key factors were noted regarding the site conditions:
- Heavy rainfall forced water through the unprotected sub-grade materials.
- Water flow caused the erosion of an embankment segment.
- Traffic flow remained uninterrupted as vehicles were already utilizing established service roads.
Political Scrutiny and Restoration Efforts
The incident drew immediate criticism from local leadership. MLA Shashikala Jolle conducted a site inspection and voiced sharp criticism regarding the durability of the current works. Jolle demanded a complete reconstruction of the failed segment and announced plans to escalate the issue to Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways. Currently, NHAI has prioritized restoration activities to stabilize the damaged embankment and conclude the construction of the carriageway.
