Ernakulam District Enacts Emergency Controls Following Red Alert Declaration

District Mobilizes for Flood Mitigation

Ernakulam District Collector G. Priyanka chaired an emergency session of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to coordinate a high-priority response to the India Meteorological Department’s red alert. The directive forces local tahsildars and village officers to maintain constant vigilance, particularly in the eastern regions of Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam, where rising water levels in Idukki and the Malankara dam outflow have pushed the Muvattupuzha river past critical warning marks.

Evacuations and Infrastructure Impact

Authorities have established nine relief camps to shelter 202 individuals from 64 families. The current displaced population includes 73 men, 103 women, 27 children, and 14 senior citizens. While urban rainfall intensified on Tuesday afternoon, no major casualties occurred, though property damage is accumulating. Since the monsoon surged on August 1, officials recorded one total house collapse and partial damage to seven other residences and a commercial outlet in Aluva.

Public Safety Restrictions and Closures

Strict prohibitions are now in effect to minimize risk to life and property:

• All educational institutions will remain closed on Wednesday, August 5.
• Mining operations are suspended district-wide for a three-day period starting Tuesday.
• Tourism sites, boat services, and access to reservoirs or beaches are prohibited.
• Night-time travel in hilly terrains is restricted between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Emergency response squads, led by deputy tahsildars, are patrolling high-risk zones. The Fire and Rescue Services, police, and the Motor Vehicles department have staged heavy machinery, including tractors and excavators, for immediate deployment. 24-hour control rooms are now operational at the collectorate and all taluk headquarters.
