Ennore Coastal Tragedy: Two Engineering Students Perish in Sea Swells

Fatality During Weekend Beach Visit
A Saturday morning gathering at Bharathiyar Beach in Ennore resulted in the deaths of two engineering students after strong offshore currents overwhelmed them on July 25, 2026. The victims, identified as 19-year-old Keerthika and 20-year-old Akash, were part of a group of five friends from a private engineering institution located in Soorapattu, Tiruvallur district.
Circumstances of the Incident
The Ennore police reported that the group visited the shoreline with the intention of swimming and recording social media videos. While the individuals were in the water, a sudden surge dragged Keerthika and Akash away from the shore. The other members of the group included:
- Pavithra (18): A second-year B.Tech IT student.
- Shivani (19): A third-year B.Tech IT student.
- Tharun (21): A B.Sc. graduate.
Emergency Response and Recovery
Local fishermen initially intervened, pulling Keerthika from the water and transporting her to a nearby medical facility. However, clinicians declared her dead upon arrival. Following the disappearance of Akash, the Fire and Rescue Services joined local maritime workers in a coordinated search operation. After three hours of scanning the surf, his body was located and retrieved. Authorities moved both victims to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital for formal post-mortem examinations. Ennore police officials have initiated a formal investigation to determine the specific factors that led to the drowning.
