Security Barriers Halt Mattancherry Demonstration
Police personnel established barricades in Mattancherry on Tuesday to block Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists from reaching the residence of Hindutva ideologue T.G. Mohandas. The march, situated in the Cherlai area, turned tense as protesters attempted to break through security lines while chanting slogans against Mohandas. The demonstration serves as a direct response to a series of provocative statements released via digital platforms.
Allegations of Incitement and Misogyny
The core of the dispute involves content from Mohandas’ YouTube channel. In one specific video, he reportedly claimed he would have shot the students protesting at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar if he held the necessary authority. A separate video drew additional condemnation for offensive remarks directed at secular women activists. In that recording, Mohandas allegedly asserted that women participating in secular protests find gratification in sexual assault.
Calls for Judicial Accountability
DYFI leadership has criticized both the authorities and the United Democratic Front government for what they perceive as investigative lethargy. Despite the public nature of the threats against student protesters, activists point out that a formal case has yet to be registered. The organization is demanding that the state initiate stringent legal proceedings immediately to address these public declarations. Protesters maintain that the lack of official action emboldens individuals to distribute violent and degrading rhetoric without consequence.
