Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns Amid NEET-UG Fallout and Sustained Street Protests

Ministerial Exit Triggered by Examination Irregularities

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, July 25, 2026. This decision follows weeks of escalating pressure from the CJP and opposition groups. Pradhan cited the need to prevent domestic unrest and legal gridlock as the primary drivers for his departure. The resignation marks a significant shift in the administration's response to the scrutiny surrounding national entrance tests.

Addressing the public via a letter to students and a post on X, Pradhan asserted that he had accepted accountability for the testing crisis from its inception. He stated that his departure aims to shield the education sector from what he described as anti-national exploitation of the current volatility. Despite the political fallout, Pradhan maintained his commitment to reform, emphasizing his four-decade career dedicated to the sector.

NEET-UG Timeline and Policy Shifts

The ministry had been under fire since May 3, 2026, when widespread irregularities surfaced during the NEET-UG exam. In response, the government initiated several corrective measures:

• Transfer of the investigative process to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
• Nullification of the initial test results and the scheduling of a fresh examination.
• Transitioning the medical entrance exam to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format starting in 2027.
• Implementation of a "whole of government approach" involving district administrations to secure the re-examination process.

The rescheduled exam took place on June 21, 2026, with results published on July 16. While Pradhan characterized these results as satisfactory, he noted that political opponents and "individuals in responsible positions" had allegedly misled students, creating a climate of confusion that necessitated his exit to preserve national unity.

Authorities Move to Disperse Jantar Mantar Demonstrations

Concurrent with the resignation, the central government has initiated steps to clear protest sites at Jantar Mantar and other locations. Pradhan’s letter suggested that prolonged demonstrations risked entangling students in legal complications and hindering their academic focus. He expressed concern that the power of India's youth was being diverted by misinformation.

Pradhan concluded his tenure by thanking the Prime Minister for the opportunity to serve and expressed his intention to continue public service in Odisha. The government has not yet named a successor to manage the Education Ministry’s transition during this period of procedural overhaul.
