Cursor Launches Low-Cost Indian Subscription as SpaceX Finalizes $60 Billion Merger

Strategic Pricing for the World's Rising Tech Hub

Cursor is aggressively expanding its footprint in India by introducing a specialized subscription tier, Cursor Start, priced at ₹649 per month (approximately $7). This new offering sits significantly below the company’s global $20 Pro plan. According to Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, India represents the firm’s first attempt at localizing its commercial model to suit specific demographic needs. The strategy targets the gap between free users and high-end professional subscribers.

India currently stands as Cursor's third-largest global market and possesses its highest concentration of power users. User growth in the region has tripled during the last 12 months. This surge aligns with broader industry data; GitHub recently noted that India hosts over 27 million developers, with two million joining in 2026 alone. The new plan supports local payment methods, including the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and standard cards, while utilizing VPN-detection measures to ensure the lower price remains exclusive to domestic users.

Infrastructure and Model Differentiation

The Cursor Start tier provides access to the proprietary Composer 2.5 and Grok 4.5 models. Unlike the Pro version, it excludes frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as advanced tools like the Cursor SDK, Auto Mode, and Bugbot. By relying on internal AI architecture, Cursor maintains lower operating costs, allowing the ₹649 price point to remain commercially viable rather than serving as a loss leader.

  • Included Features: Cloud agents, iOS application access, Model Context Protocol support, and enhanced usage limits.
  • Market Exclusion: The plan is designed for individuals and does not currently extend to the enterprise sector.
  • Future Expansion: While currently unique to India, success here may lead to similar rollouts in other international markets.

The SpaceX Integration and Domestic Growth

This expansion arrives as the startup nears the finalization of its acquisition by SpaceX, a $60 billion all-stock transaction following SpaceX's initial public offering. Expected to close in Q3, the deal builds on a collaboration started in April to develop advanced "knowledge work AI." While Cursor currently operates independently, the company expects SpaceX’s Starlink infrastructure in India to eventually reduce operational and commercial hurdles.

Cursor is also scaling its physical presence across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The firm recently appointed its first Indian salesperson and is recruiting for a leadership role in Delhi, alongside new hires for government affairs and technical support. While early adoption has been fueled by startups and universities, the company is now eyeing large-scale enterprise opportunities within India’s banking and corporate sectors.
