Climate Stress and Private Competition Squeeze Tiruchi Aavin Milk Supply

Supply Shortage Hits Tiruchi Cooperative

The Tiruchi Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, a major arm of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation, is struggling to meet its procurement targets. Current data shows daily intake has slumped to 1.70 lakh liters, a significant drop from the standard 2.2 lakh liters. This deficit directly impacts the local market, where Aavin supplies approximately 1.65 lakh liters against a demand of 2 lakh liters. The supply gap prompted milk agents to protest at the Collector Office on Monday, formally petitioning for a resolution to the reduced distributions.

The Dual Pressure of Climate and Pricing

Two primary factors are driving this procurement crisis: environmental stress and market competition. Although milk yields typically recover by June following the summer dip, an absence of rain during the current Southwest monsoon has extended drought-like conditions. This persistent heat has degraded cattle health and eliminated green pastures across the district, forcing farmers to rely on expensive dry fodder.

Economic incentives are further pulling farmers away from the cooperative system. Private dairies currently offer between RS 42 and RS 45 per liter, significantly outstripping Aavin’s rate of RS 38 per liter, which includes incentives. Key market dynamics contributing to the shift include:

  • Private players frequently bypass the rigorous quality benchmarks mandated by the cooperative.
  • Aavin’s recent restructure restricted procurement to Tiruchi district alone, following the creation of a separate union for Ariyalur and Perambalur.
  • Rising private retail prices have driven more consumers toward Aavin, though the union cannot currently fulfill this increased interest.

Structural Challenges for 51,000 Producers

The union serves as the primary outlet for 51,000 member suppliers across 612 cooperative societies. Despite its historical status as one of the state's oldest processing hubs, its procurement plan remains under threat from the prolonged dry weather. Industry sources indicate that unless weather conditions improve or pricing structures are adjusted, the collection figures may continue to decline in the coming weeks. Aavin officials acknowledge the aggressive procurement strategies of private competitors and state that measures are underway to stabilize the supply chain.
