Cleaning the Tracks: CBI Dismantles Bribery Operations across Three Railway Zones

Coordinated Crackdown on Railway Financial Misconduct

Federal investigators have apprehended three high-ranking railway officials and several corporate figures in a series of targeted operations across Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. These arrests, executed between July 22 and July 25, 2026, expose a pattern of illicit payments exchanged for the expedited processing of government contracts and outstanding invoices.

The Mumbai Connection: IRCTC and Araha Hospitality

On July 22, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained a senior executive from the IRCTC West Zone office alongside the director of Araha Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. The agency alleges that between April and June 2026, the official received approximately Rs 3.98 lakh in bribes. These funds were reportedly deposited directly into the official’s bank account to secure the clearance of pending bills belonging to the Kolkata-based hotelier.

Key evidence seized during the Mumbai operation includes:

• Digital records of incriminating WhatsApp communications.
• Cash totaling Rs 4.49 lakh found in the possession of the private director during the confrontation.
• Official files and billing records from the hospitality firm.

The Special Court has remanded both individuals to police custody until July 27.

Varanasi: Extortion via Payment Withholding

In a separate action on July 23, the CBI intercepted the Senior Divisional Materials Manager of North Eastern Railway in Varanasi. The case originated from a complaint by a furniture supplier registered on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). Despite fulfilling a Rs 9.47 lakh order, the vendor alleged the manager stalled payments to demand a Rs 1.70 lakh kickback. The official reportedly threatened to blacklist the firm from future contracts if the demand was not met. The CBI apprehended the manager mid-transaction; he is currently in judicial custody until August 7.

Howrah: Signal and Telecommunication Fraud

The final operation occurred on July 25 at Howrah railway station, involving the Deputy Chief Signal & Telecommunication Engineer for the Chakradharpur Division. Investigators allege the engineer conspired with representatives of MRT Signals Ltd. to manipulate Price Variation Clause (PVC) filings and other contract approvals. While the official had reportedly already secured Rs 5 lakh in May, the CBI moved in as he allegedly accepted a subsequent Rs 4 lakh payment. This represents the first bribery sting operation conducted by the agency in West Bengal in several years.

Authorities conducted searches at various residential and professional sites across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal to secure digital evidence and further documentation as the investigation continues.
