Chennai Metrowater has launched a series of technical interventions to stabilize the piped water network in southern neighborhoods. This action follows reports of inconsistent service affecting numerous residents. The agency confirmed that localized water pressure issues resulted from a significant drop in output from the Nemmeli desalination infrastructure.
Input Deficit Triggers Grid Pressure Issues
Over the previous fortnight, the daily water allocation for the southern metropolitan region fell significantly below targeted levels. The agency reported the following data regarding the supply gap:
- Allocated Supply: 93.5 million liters per day (mld).
- Actual Shortfall: 24 million liters per day (mld).
- Primary Cause: Production issues at Nemmeli desalination plants.
The supply contraction specifically impacted household connections in Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery, Besant Nagar, and Taramani. Officials are currently implementing alternate distribution routes to compensate for the lost volume while work continues to restore full capacity at the source plants.
