Chennai Authorities Disrupt Pharmaceutical Smuggling Rings; Over 14,000 Pilled Seized
Greater Chennai Police dismantle two separate illicit medication distribution networks, leading to three arrests and the recovery of 14,060 tablets. Investigations indicate a bulk procurement route spanning from Mumbai to Chennai via rail.
Supply Routes from Mumbai Exposed
Law enforcement operations in Chennai led to the apprehension of three suspects involved in the distribution of restricted pharmaceutical drugs. Interrogations revealed that two of the men, identified as 20-year-old Saravanan from Mangadu and 19-year-old Raguram from Kovur, regularly traveled to Mumbai by train. Their objective involved purchasing bulk quantities of pharmaceuticals to supply the Chennai market. Officers from the Ashok Nagar police station arrested the duo on the morning of July 26, noting that Saravanan had a prior criminal record.
Elephant Gate Operations and Madurai Connection
In a parallel investigation, the Elephant Gate police Inspector initiated a crackdown starting July 21. Officers first apprehended 43-year-old D. Anand Kumar of Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar near the GST Office. While that initial arrest yielded 790 tablets, it triggered a cross-district investigation. A specialized police unit tracked an accomplice to Madurai, resulting in the July 25 arrest of 38-year-old M.R. Anand Kumar in Balarangapuram. The suspect was transported to Chennai for questioning following the discovery of a large stash.
Breakdown of Seized Controlled Substances
The combined police actions resulted in the recovery of 14,060 tablets. The contraband included diverse classes of regulated medications:
- 8,400 alprazolam tablets
- 3,000 nitrazepam tablets
- 1,700 tapentadol tablets
- 900 clonazepam tablets
- 60 additional nitrazepam tablets from the Ashok Nagar case
The Greater Chennai Police have confirmed that all three suspects are in custody as investigations into the supply chain continue.
