Centuries-Old Srirangam Government Hospital Slated for Major Infrastructure Overhaul
Health officials plan to replace the aging Srirangam Government Hospital infrastructure, where 150-year-old blocks have been declared unsafe. The proposal aims to modernize a facility that currently manages 750 outpatients daily on leased religious endowment land.
Modernization Plans Targeting Dilapidated Colonial-Era Facilities
The Directorate of Medical Services has initiated a plan to revitalize the Srirangam Government Hospital, an institution that traces its origins to a small British-era dispensary established in 1873. While the hospital has evolved into a key taluk-level healthcare facility, its physical infrastructure has failed to keep pace. Currently, approximately half of the existing buildings are considered serviceable, while the remainder—including the casualty block and the male medical ward—are over 150 years old and structurally compromised.
Authorities officially condemned the male medical ward as unfit for use several years ago, forcing its closure. While some structures were added two decades ago, the overall decline of the facility prompted the current proposal for a comprehensive rebuild. HR&CE Minister S. Ramesh confirmed on July 26, 2026, that the government intends to construct entirely new infrastructure to provide contemporary medical care to the region's residents.
Operational Capacities and Logistics
The hospital functions on a three-acre site located on Gandhi Road, situated directly opposite Srirangam's new bus terminal. This land is owned by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, to which the health department pays a monthly rent of ₹80,000. Despite the aging facilities, the hospital remains a vital local resource, maintaining the following metrics:
- Patient Volume: Averaging 750 outpatients and 120 inpatients every day.
- Personnel: A sanctioned staff of 21 doctors.
- Clinical Reach: Departments including General Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Ophthalmology, alongside a dedicated dialysis unit.
Decision-makers are currently evaluating two primary options: rebuilding entirely within the current Gandhi Road footprint or relocating the hospital to a new site. Minister Ramesh noted that a formal announcement regarding the location and final project scope is expected shortly.
