The study tracked how various beverages alter the acidity levels within the human mouth, focusing on the fluctuations of salivary pH levels after consumption.

The Resilience of Enamel Against Sparkling Water

Data from the trial showed that while both beverages impact the mouth's environment, their long-term effects differ significantly:

  • Soda Performance: Carbonated soft drinks triggered the most intense and sustained drop in pH levels, maintaining an acidic environment for an extended duration.
  • Sparkling Water Performance: Though carbonated water caused an initial dip in pH, the decline was brief. Saliva functioned effectively to restore neutral conditions shortly after ingestion.

Researchers noted that the acidity levels recorded after drinking sparkling water did not cross the specific threshold known to cause permanent enamel erosion. This suggests that without the presence of added sugars or citric acids found in sodas, the mechanical action of carbonation alone poses a minimal risk to dental integrity.
