Innovative chemical imaging has identified charcoal traces within prehistoric cave art, allowing for the direct carbon dating of previously inaccessible works. The findings reveal that some Paleolithic figures were modified across spans of several thousand years.
Technological Breakthrough in Pigment Analysis
For decades, the black figures within the Font-de-Gaume cave in southwestern France were deemed undatable. Archaeologists historically suspected these prehistoric pigments consisted of iron and manganese oxides—minerals devoid of the organic carbon required for radiocarbon testing. However, a multidisciplinary French team has overturned this assumption using Raman microspectrometry and hyperspectral imaging. These non-invasive techniques identify chemical signatures by analyzing molecular vibrations and light reflection patterns across the visual spectrum.
The study, published in PNAS, confirmed that charcoal was intentionally integrated into the black pigment used for two specific figures: a bison and a mask-like image. Because the charcoal was distributed uniformly throughout the lines rather than appearing as surface contamination, researchers concluded it was an original component of the artist’s kit. This discovery allowed teams to extract microscopic samples for precise Carbon-14 measurement.
A Bison from the Upper Paleolithic
Dating results for the bison figure place its creation between 13,461 and 13,162 calibrated years before present (calBP). This timeframe identifies the artwork as a product of the Upper Paleolithic, though the date is slightly more recent than previous stylistic estimates suggested. To ensure accuracy, scientists calibrated the radiocarbon data to account for historical fluctuations in atmospheric carbon-14 levels caused by solar activity and shifts in the Earth's magnetic field.
The Multi-Generational Legacy of the Mask
While the bison represents a specific moment in time, the 'mask' figure tells a more complex story of human interaction. Analysis of different sections of this single image yielded three distinct chronological ranges:
- Upper Layer: 8,993 to 8,590 calBP
- Intermediate Section: 15,297 to 14,246 calBP
- Oldest Layer: 15,981 to 15,121 calBP
This data suggests that the mask was not a static creation but a site of repeated artistic intervention.
