End of a Century-Long Botanical Silence

For over 150 years, the delicate purple-blue blooms of Cyananthus hookeri were relegated to historical archives and dried herbarium specimens in India. This silence ended recently when a research team from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) identified a cluster of the bell-shaped flowers on a rugged alpine slope in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The discovery, documented in the international conservation journal Oryx, represents the first confirmed sighting of the species within Indian borders since 1867.

Mapping a Rare Alpine Resident

British botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker initially recorded the species during an 1867 expedition to Sikkim. While the plant continued to appear in botanical records across Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet, and China, it vanished from the Indian scientific catalog for 158 years. The new findings by BSI scientists Sudhansu Sekhar Dash, Subhajit Lahiri, and Monalisa Das not only confirm the plant's continued existence in India but also establish its first-ever presence in the high-altitude landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh.

High-Altitude Survival and Conservation Needs

The team located the small population during a field survey near Mago village in the Chuna Valley. Thriving at approximately 3,600 meters above sea level, the plants were found growing on rocky, grass-covered slopes. The BSI researchers noted several key observations regarding the find:

  • The discovery provides vital data for monitoring Himalayan plant diversity and habitat health.
  • Only a small colony of mature plants was identified, indicating potential vulnerability.
  • The site highlights the Eastern Himalayas as an essential biodiversity hotspot that requires ongoing protection.

The researchers emphasize that the long gap in documentation likely stems from the remote and inaccessible nature of these high-altitude terrains. The discovery suggests that other species currently listed as missing from India's records may still survive in these isolated pockets. Consequently, the team has called for expanded botanical surveys and long-term monitoring to ensure the preservation of this fragile alpine ecosystem.
