Bengaluru East Shifts Into High Gear to Resolve Terminal Traffic Bottlenecks
Administrative and traffic police leaders have launched a series of infrastructure reviews to eliminate congestion at key intersections. The initiatives include new railway underpasses, road widening projects, and accelerated construction timelines for critical junctions.
Accelerated Timelines and Technical Feasibility Studies
Following a high-level site inspection on Sunday, District Commissioner D.S. Ramesh issued mandates to fast-track critical infrastructure projects aimed at easing Bengaluru East’s gridlock. During a joint tour with Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), the Commissioner ordered a technical feasibility study for a new railway underpass. This structure is intended to link Alpine Eco Road directly to the Outer Ring Road service road, providing an essential bypass for commuters. At Hope Farm Junction, where an underpass is already being built, Ramesh instructed contractors to move to a three-shift work schedule to minimize delays. He also ordered immediate temporary asphalting on broken sections of the road to alleviate current driver frustration.
Strategic Interventions at Major Intersections
The review covered several notorious transit points where structural changes are now under consideration:
- Marathahalli Junction: Officials are evaluating the installation of a skywalk for pedestrians crossing from HAL Road. Additionally, a plan for a free left turn for commuters moving from Varthur Kodi toward the Outer Ring Road is being analyzed.
- Panathur S-Cross: Ramesh requested a comprehensive report regarding land acquisition requirements and the cost of widening the road corridor near the existing railway underpass.
- Bhoganahalli Road: A proposal is currently under review to introduce a free left turn to prevent vehicle queuing at the junction.
Expansion Projects and Policy Measures
The inspection team further examined the Thubarahalli-Vibgyor School Road, a site frequently cited for extreme congestion. B-SMILE is currently finalizing a detailed project report for a proposed buffer road designed to redirect traffic flow away from the most crowded segments. These coordinated efforts between the city corporation and traffic enforcement represent a data-driven push to improve the mobility of the city's eastern corridors through both immediate repairs and long-term engineering solutions.
