Assam Flood Toll Reaches 66 as Crisis Slowly Eases in Six Districts

Fatality Count Rises Amid Gradual Recessions
The cumulative death toll from the 2026 monsoon floods in Assam has hit 66 after four fatalities were reported in a 24-hour period ending Saturday, July 26. Data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) indicates that Sivasagar recorded three of these deaths, while the neighboring Charaideo district reported one. Despite these losses, the overall volume of affected citizens saw a moderate decrease from 7.05 lakh people across nine districts on Friday to 6.54 lakh across six districts by the following morning.
Sivasagar Remains the Epicenter of Inundation
Sivasagar currently faces the most severe impact, with approximately 2.9 lakh residents submerged by the deluge. Other heavily impacted regions include:
- Charaideo: 1.9 lakh people affected
- Jorhat: Over 1.3 lakh people affected
- Additional Districts: Dibrugarh, Golaghat, and Nagaon
Floodwaters currently submerge 810 villages across the state. While waters are retreating in some areas, the Dikhou and Dhansiri rivers remain volatile, maintaining levels above the designated danger marks at Sivasagar and Numaligarh respectively.
Infrastructure Damage and Relief Operations
The environmental crisis has inflicted heavy tolls on the state's agriculture and connectivity. ASDMA reports that 34,970.8 hectares of cropland are now damaged. Furthermore, the persistent pressure of the water has compromised vital infrastructure, including river embankments, bridges, and road networks. To manage the displacement, the state administration is currently operating 274 relief camps and distribution centers, providing shelter and essential supplies to 18,902 individuals.
