High-Altitude and Sub-Zero Adaptations
While the public often associates the tiger with tropical heat, the Amur tiger (also recognized as the Siberian, Ussurian, or Manchurian tiger) survives in the volatile climate of the Russian Far East and Northeast China. Here, temperatures drop beneath -30°C. These felids have developed physiological specializations absent in their southern relatives, including a paled winter coat for camouflage, a thick insulating layer of fat, and widened paws that function as snowshoes for patrolling the northernmost edge of their range.
Evolutionary resilience is similarly evident in the Himalayan foothills. In regions like Corbett National Park, which supports over 260 tigers, and the rugged terrain of Bhutan and Nepal, tigers navigate steep elevations and rocky valleys. Current climate modeling suggests these mountain corridors may serve as essential refuges as global temperatures rise.
Water-Bound and Seasonal Strongholds
The Sundarbans, a massive mangrove network spanning India and Bangladesh, presents a starkly different challenge. Bengal tigers here have adapted to a semi-aquatic life, navigating saline tides and muddy islands. Forest Diversity and Density
