West Bengal government seeks support of DMSC for cervical cancer vaccination for sex workers in Sonagachi

The West Bengal health department has initiated a dialogue with the Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC) to implement a targeted cervical cancer immunization program. The initiative seeks to provide vaccinations to sex workers and their daughters within the Sonagachi neighborhood of Kolkata, addressing a critical gap in preventative healthcare.

DMSC, which recently celebrated its 31st anniversary, serves as a prominent collective dedicated to the rights, health, and social recognition of sex workers. Due to the committee's deep-rooted trust within the community, government officials believe their involvement is essential for the successful rollout and acceptance of the vaccine.

Health officials noted that the partnership will involve awareness campaigns to educate residents about the risks of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and the benefits of early vaccination. The administrative support from DMSC is expected to streamline the registration process and ensure high participation rates across the district.

This development comes as the state amplifies its broader efforts to curb cervical cancer rates through localized community outreach and specialized clinics. Source: Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee.
