New York to impose the country’s first state-wide moratorium on data centres

New York officials have announced a statewide moratorium on new large-scale data centers, marking the first initiative of its kind in the United States. The temporary suspension, which could last up to one year, is designed to give regulators time to study how these massive facilities affect the local environment and the stability of the electrical infrastructure.

The surge in artificial intelligence technologies has led to a rapid increase in demand for data centers, which require significant amounts of electricity and water for cooling. Lawmakers expressed concern that unrestricted growth could jeopardize the state's transition to renewable energy and lead to higher utility costs for residential consumers.

During the pause, the state will conduct a comprehensive environmental review to establish new standards for energy efficiency and sustainability in the tech sector. Existing facilities are not expected to be affected by the new regulations during this evaluation period. Source: New York State Government.
