Finland maintains a massive underground network beneath Helsinki capable of sheltering the city's entire population. The infrastructure serves as a strategic defense measure given the nation's 830-mile border with Russia.
Helsinki is positioned atop a vast labyrinth of more than 500 individual underground bunkers and facilities carved into the bedrock. This subterranean network includes swimming pools, sports centers, and parking garages that can be converted into emergency shelters within 72 hours, providing space for over one million people.
The construction of these facilities is a core component of Finland's comprehensive defense strategy. Located less than 200 miles from St. Petersburg, the capital city requires robust civil protection measures to ensure the safety of its inhabitants during potential geopolitical conflicts.
The tunnels are designed to withstand nuclear blasts, chemical attacks, and conventional bombardment.
