Nasscom warns of decline in deep engineering skills as AI takes over routine work

A recent study by Nasscom indicates that while approximately two-thirds of India’s young workforce are considered AI-proficient, only 23% possess the qualifications to be classified as AI-native. This disparity suggests that while many workers can use AI tools, few have the deep engineering expertise necessary to build and maintain them.

The shift toward automation is rapidly replacing routine coding and entry-level engineering work, which traditionally served as the training ground for junior developers. Industry experts express concern that without these foundational roles, the pipeline for high-level architectural and deep-tech talent may be compromised.

To address this skill gap, Nasscom is advocating for a pivot in educational and corporate training programs toward complex problem-solving and specialized engineering disciplines. The goal is to evolve the workforce from tool-users into innovators capable of driving the next wave of technological advancement. Source: Nasscom Study.
