Madras HC to take up today MRK Panneerselvam’s plea to be discharged from 2011 disproportionate assets case

The Madras High Court will today consider the petition filed by Tamil Nadu Minister MRK Panneerselvam, who is seeking a discharge from a long-standing disproportionate assets case originating in 2011. The legal proceedings involve allegations of wealth accumulation beyond known sources of income during his tenure.

This current legal action follows a complex judicial history for the case. While a magistrate originally allowed a discharge plea in 2016, that decision was later overturned by the High Court in early 2025, bringing the charges back into active litigation.

The court's decision on this second discharge plea will determine whether the Minister must face a full trial or if the proceedings against him will be terminated. Legal representatives for both the state and the Minister are expected to present arguments today.
