"Long Negotiations": Sonam Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike After 26 Days
Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk has concluded his 26-day hunger strike in New Delhi after several weeks of continuous protest. The climate campaigner had been fasting to demand constitutional safeguards and statehood for the Union Territory of Ladakh.
Sonam Wangchuk and his fellow supporters ended their indefinite hunger strike at Ladakh Bhavan in New Delhi on Wednesday evening. The decision to call off the fast came after the Ministry of Home Affairs initiated a fresh round of communication regarding the regions administrative and environmental concerns.
The activists had been demanding the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to provide local tribes with greater legislative and land protections. This latest protest followed a long march from Leh to the capital city, aimed at drawing national attention to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
While the hunger strike has concluded, Wangchuk indicated that the broader movement for constitutional rights will continue based on future meetings with government representatives. The group remains committed to securing democratic representation through statehood for the remote border region.
