Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind, has advocated for the formation of an international regulatory body tasked with monitoring the risks associated with frontier AI models. In a recent blog post, Hassabis expressed that such an organization should possess the capability to halt or slow down development if specific safety thresholds are breached.

The DeepMind executive specifically recommended that the United States lead this initiative. He argued that the U.S. is uniquely positioned to set global benchmarks due to its significant economic influence and its central role in the current technological landscape.

Hassabis suggested that while individual corporate efforts are important, a coordinated global approach is necessary to manage potential existential threats. He emphasized that the proposed watchdog would ensure that AI progress remains aligned with human safety interests as the technology advances toward greater complexity. Source: Google DeepMind blog.
