External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar formally launched India's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-29 term during his recent diplomatic engagements. India previously served as a non-permanent member during the 2021-22 period, where it focused on maritime security, counter-terrorism, and peacekeeping.
Elections for the 2028-29 term are scheduled to take place in June next year. The process involves member states voting to fill regional slots, with India seeking to secure a position that allows it to participate in high-level decision-making regarding international peace and security.
India and Tajikistan are expected to compete for the sole seat available within the Asia-Pacific Group during this election cycle. A successful bid requires a two-thirds majority vote from the UN General Assembly. Source: Press Trust of India.
