Drone sample testing is cutting TB diagnosis costs from ₹9,451 to ₹91 in Telangana’s Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district

In an effort to enhance public health delivery, authorities in Telangana’s Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district have integrated drone technology into the tuberculosis diagnostic workflow. Historically, the expenses associated with transporting samples from remote areas and the subsequent patient travel led to a total diagnosis cost of ₹9,451 per case. These costs have now plummeted to ₹91 by utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles for rapid sample delivery.

The drone systems enable the collection of sputum samples from primary health centers and move them directly to advanced testing labs in a fraction of the time required by road transport. This shift not only financial burdens but also ensures that patients in isolated regions receive their results much faster, allowing for earlier medical intervention and reduced community transmission.

Officials noted that the automation of sample collection minimizes the risk of sample degradation during long transits over difficult terrain. The district serves as a pilot for scaling such drone-based medical logistics across other rural zones in Telangana to improve healthcare accessibility.
