CAG flags Kochi Corporation’s idling vehicle fleet bleeding public money
The Comptroller and Auditor General has raised alarms over severe mismanagement within the Kochi Corporation's vehicle fleet. The report highlights significant financial losses stemming from a majority of the fleet remaining non-functional or unserviceable.

A recent report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has revealed critical deficiencies in the Kochi Corporation’s management of its civic vehicle fleet. It was found that out of a total of 143 vehicles owned by the local body, 72 were categorized as unserviceable and required immediate auctioning.
The audit further identified that an additional 34 vehicles have been taken off the roads due to a lack of fitness certifications or the absence of necessary maintenance. This has left only a small fraction of the fleet operational for essential municipal duties and waste management services.
The idling of these vehicles has been described as a drain on public resources, as the Corporation continues to incur costs while failing to utilize its assets effectively. The CAG has called for greater accountability and a streamlined maintenance schedule to prevent future logistical bottlenecks.
