Opposition Walks Out Of Assam Assembly Demanding Tribal Status For 6 Communities

Members of the opposition parties staged a walkout during the Assam Assembly session following a heated debate regarding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The protest was led by the Leader of the Opposition, who criticized the ruling government for failing to deliver on constitutional guarantees for specific ethnic groups.

The six communities seeking inclusion in the ST category are the Koch-Rajbongshi, Tai-Ahom, Chutia, Matak, Moran, and the Tea Tribes. Opposition leaders alleged that the BJP-led government had repeatedly promised to resolve this issue during election campaigns but has yet to finalize the legal process since taking office.

Government representatives maintained that the process of granting tribal status involves complex constitutional procedures and coordination with the central government. Despite these assurances, the opposition walked out of the chamber, claiming the administration was lacking the necessary political will to fulfill its commitments.
