Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate to be split into multiple units?
Legislators and administrative experts are considering a proposal to split the Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate into multiple smaller units. Unlike other major Indian metropolises, Bengaluru currently maintains a single, massive jurisdiction covering both its urban and suburban areas.
Bengaluru stands as the only major metropolitan region in India that operates under a single, large police commissionerate surrounded by rural district units. In contrast, cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai have already transitioned to models featuring multiple commissionerates to manage their growing populations.
The current structure covers both the central business districts and rapidly developing suburban zones under one central command. Proponents of the split argue that creating multiple units would enhance administrative efficiency and improve response times in high-growth corridors.
Critics of the existing single-commissionerate model point to the increasing complexity of urban governance as a primary reason for restructuring. While discussions are ongoing, any official split would require significant legislative changes and resource reallocation from the state government.
