Uttarakhand’s Dhruv Negi beat Rajasthan’s Pranay Katta 20-18, 14-16, 15-11 in the final to clinch the Yonex-Sunrise All India Senior Ranking badminton tournament men’s singles title at the Jawaharlal Nehru indoor stadium here on Thursday.
The 20-year-old’s triumph was his maiden senior men’s singles title.
In the women’s final, Haryana’s Jiya Rawat defeated Andhra Pradesh’s M. Tanishq 15-12, 15-10 to claim the title.
The tournament also threw up a few surprises. Tamil Nadu’s mixed doubles specialist K. Sathish Kumar suffered a quarterfinal exit to an unseeded Kerala pair. Reigning Asian u-17 champion S.R. Diksha and Sadhana Fenelon, a bronze medallist at last week’s National Ranking tournament in Kochi, also bowed out early in the women’s singles.
The championship was also without two leading international shuttlers - reigning National men’s singles champion Rithvik Sanjeevi and former junior World No. 1 Sankar Muthusamy - who were away on international duty.
Former Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) president Ashok Sigamani and Tamil Nadu Badminton Association (TNBA) secretary Ve. Arunachalam presented the prizes.
Other results (finals): Doubles: Men: Viplav Kuvale and Viraj Kuvale (Mah) bt Mohammad Amaan (Raj) and Dingku Singh Konthoujam (Man) 13-15, 15-4, 15-4; Women: V.S. Varshini (TN) and Nayana S. Oasis (Ker) bt Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda (Odi) 15-12, 15-6; Mixed: Vimalraj Annadurai and Shreya Balaji (TN) bt Sankarprasad Udayakumar and Diya Arun (Ker) 15-8, 15-10.
