Woman from Rameswaram arrested for helping cybercriminals to defraud Madurai man of ₹78.75 lakh

Madurai District Police have arrested a woman from Rameswaram, N. Maheswari, for facilitating cybercriminals to use her bank accounts to defraud a man from Madurai district.

The police said the arrest was made during the investigation into a digital arrest case registered in February 2026.

The police said that the man got a call from an anonymous person, who claimed to be calling from a police station in Bengaluru.

After verifying his name and address, the caller had told the complainant that a case had been registered against him on charges of having made transactions for several crores of rupees using a fake bank account in his name.

The accused had threatened him that he had been digitally arrested and sought his bank account details.

When the man revealed that he had ₹78.75 lakh in his savings bank account, he was threatened to send the money to a bank account.

When the caller had demanded more money, the man had realised that he had been defrauded and lodged a police complaint.

Madurai Cyber Crime Police had registered a case and investigated into the case.

The police found that the money had been withdrawn from a particular bank account. It was then handed over to cybercriminals by Maheshwari, who was given a commission for this transaction.

The police recovered passbooks of 24 bank accounts, 20 ATM cards, two SIM cards and a mobile phone from her.

In a statement, Madurai District Superintendent of Police N. Devanathan has warned such people working for commission with stringent action.

People who lose money to cybercriminals should immediately lodge a complaint through toll-free number 1930 or through www.cybercrime.gov.in
