Unquiet runs Satluj: The ban and after

The 1980s to mid-1990s were a deeply violent period in Punjab. Armed militants were demanding a separate nation called Khalistan, and many innocent lives were lost during the conflict. The police also faced serious allegations of extrajudicial killings, arrests without due process, and the cremation of bodies without informing families. Jaswant Singh Khalra spoke out against these alleged human rights violations. In 1995, he disappeared and was later found to have been abducted, brutally tortured, and murdered. Several police officials were later convicted of the crime. Satluj, the movie, is based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, his fight for justice, and one of the darkest chapters in Punjab’s history. The film was released on an OTT platform on July 3rd but was removed within 48 hours. The movie was blocked as the Government invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000—which allows the government to block information that could potentially impact, among others, the sovereignty and integrity of India, public order or defence.
