Two-year-old girl undergoes complex renal cancer surgery at Tiruchi’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial GH

Doctors in the Department of Paediatric Surgery at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi successfully performed a complex cancer surgery on a two-year-old girl diagnosed with one of the most common kidney cancers affecting children recently.

According to a hospital press release on Tuesday (July 21, 2026), the girl from Manapparai, was brought to the Department of Paediatric Surgery at MGMGH after her parents noticed an abdominal swelling.

She was admitted on July 10 and after a detailed clinical evaluation and imaging, she was diagnosed with a right-sided ‘Wilms tumour’, a malignant tumour arising from the right kidney.

The child underwent a radical right nephrectomy with extensive lymph node dissection on July 13. The procedure involved complete removal of the cancerous right kidney along with the surrounding lymph nodes to ensure adequate cancer clearance and accurate staging.

The surgery was successfully performed by Nirankumar Samuel, assistant professor, Department of Paediatric Surgery.

The child recovered well after surgery and is being prepared to receive adjuvant chemotherapy as part of the standard treatment protocol to maximise the chances of complete cure, said the release.

Wilms tumour is the most common kidney cancer in children, accounting for nearly 90% of paediatric renal malignancies. Although relatively uncommon, it affects several hundred children across India every year.
