A special police team shot and apprehended a 26-year-old history-sheeter who allegedly attacked a head constable while attempting to escape on Saturday (July 18, 2026).

A senior officer of the Tambaram Police Commissionerate said the accused, Karuppu alias Tamilazhagu, was a resident of Eeswaran Kovil Street in Thirumudivakkam, and several criminal cases were registered against him, including 15 murder and attempt to murder cases.

Based on a tip off, a special team led by Thirumudivakkam police inspector Muthukumar apprehended him along with his associate Akash alias Surya, 24. Later, the police team based on their alleged confession, took Karuppu for recovering the weapons “they had hidden at a location near the Kavanur grounds” (near Kundrathur).

The police claimed that after reaching the spot, Karuppu took out a knife, and injured head constable Vijayakumar on his right elbow and attempted to escape. Immediately, the inspector took out his service revolver and shot the suspect on his right ankle and apprehended him.

Karuppu was taken to the Tambaram Government Hospital and was later shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital for advanced treatment. The injured head constable received outpatient treatment.

The police said Karuppu, who is the brother-in-law of the notorious rowdy ‘Otteri’ Silambu, and Surya was involved in manufacturing country-made bombs.
