Tamil Nadu Today: Vijay chairs Cabinet meeting ahead of Budget

1. T.N. Cabinet discusses on Budget

Details of the upcoming State Budget were discussed during the Tamil Nadu Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai today (July 16, 2026). 

Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar said strict action would be taken against those responsible for the death of remand prisoner S. Sabari Varman in Nagercoil and in cases of prison or lock-up deaths, the government would firmly stand by the victims.

2. Government officials facing corruption charges not entitled to promotion: Madras HC

A government servant facing corruption charges cannot seek promotion as a matter of right just because his/her name had been included in the promotion panel prepared much before the framing of charges in departmental proceedings, the Madras High Court has ruled.

3. Six men arrested for stealing silver-laced soil from Hindustan Photo Films factory

The Nilgiris district police arrested six persons including the TVK branch secretary from Ward Number 2 in Udhagamandalam for trespassing into the defunct Hindustan Photo Films (HPF) factory premises and illegally transporting more than three tonnes of soil, believed to be laced with silver nitrate accrued when the plant was functional.

4. Nainar Nagenthran appears before Chennai court

Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran appeared before a court in George Town Court complex, Chennai and received the copy of the charge sheet in connection with the case relating to seizure of ₹3.99 crore from one of his staff on the Nellai Express train ahead of 2024 Parliamentary elections.
