Tamil Nadu government seeks assistance from Union government for MRTS revamp in Chennai
The Tamil Nadu government has reached out to the Union government for financial and technical support regarding the overhaul of Chennai's Mass Rapid Transit System. The proposed project aims to bring existing rail infrastructure up to modern metro standards through a multi-billion rupee investment.
The Tamil Nadu government has formally requested assistance from the Union government for a ₹6,600-crore initiative to revamp the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in Chennai. The proposal focuses on transforming the existing network to meet Chennai Metro standards, which includes the refurbishment of several railway stations and the technical upgrading of train sets.
As part of the plan, state officials have urged the Union government to treat the redevelopment as a 'Central sector' project to streamline funding and execution. This move is intended to improve urban mobility and provide a seamless transit experience for commuters by integrating the older railway infrastructure with the newer metro rail lines.
The project is expected to enhance passenger amenities and operational efficiency across the city's coastal rail corridor. Tamil Nadu authorities are currently awaiting a response regarding the classification and financing structure of the upgrades. Source: The Hindu.
