Shiv Sena corporator Mahesh Mhatre surrendered to the police on Wednesday, just one day after a division bench of the Bombay High Court canceled his bail. The surrender took place at a local police station following the court's directive to resume judicial custody in connection with the assault on doctors.
The legal shift occurred when the division bench, consisting of Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad, overturned a previous decision by the Kalyan magistrate court. The bench noted that the initial bail grant did not sufficiently account for the existing criminal history and cases registered against Mhatre.
Medical associations had previously voiced strong concerns regarding the incident, calling for stricter enforcement of laws protecting healthcare workers.
