Public sponsor 25 CCTV cameras to be fitted in Sankarankovil

Even as the police, as part of its crime prevention initiative, have taken special measures to fit CCTV cameras across the district, particularly in towns attracting huge crowd during festivals and other celebrations, the public have sponsored 25 ‘electronic eyes’ to be fitted in Sankarankovil.

While encouraging the public, particularly traders, to fit CCTV cameras in their homes, business establishments and also in the adjoining areas to keep criminals away, the police had requested the service organisations to sponsor ‘electronic eyes’ to prevent crimes.

When Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar renewed this appeal recently, the public of Pottal and Gandhi Nagar in Sankarankovil responded positively.

“Since Sankarankovil attracts thousands of devotees everyday during the ‘Aadi thavasu’ celebrations of Sri Sankaranarayanar Temple, particularly on the day of ‘thavasu’, monitoring and regulating the crowd by the police becomes really tough even though sufficient number of police personnel are deployed. If the control room created for this purpose is connected to as many CCTV cameras fitted at vantage points of Sankarankovil, law enforcement and traffic and crowd regulation would become easier. Hence, the traders and service organisations were requested to sponsor the CCTV cameras to encourage public participation in ensuring rule of law,” said Mr. Ashok Kumar.

Moved by the appeal, the residents of Pottal and Gandhi Nagar have donated 25 CCTV cameras, which have been fitted in various parts of this town even as Sankarankovil is overflowing with devotees coming for ‘Aadi thavasu’ celebrations.

“It is so heartening to receive the generous contribution of the public and lessening our burden while we perform crime prevention and law enforcement. The installation of CCTV cameras in houses, in hospitals, business establishments, godowns and along the streets will certainly discourage criminals from orchestrating crimes. When they dare to commit a crime despite our monitoring, they are easily detained with the CCTV cameras providing us clinching evidences. So, we thank the public who sponsored the CCTV cameras,” said Mr. Ashok Kumar.
