Over 820 motorists booked for drunk driving in Hyderabad, Cyberabad
Traffic police across Hyderabad and Cyberabad commissionerates booked 823 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during special weekend enforcement drives between Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18.
While Hyderabad Traffic Police caught 586 drunk drivers during the two-day special drive, Cyberabad Police apprehended 237 offenders during their weekend checks.
In Hyderabad, of those booked, 439 were riding two-wheelers, 45 were driving three-wheelers and 97 were driving four-wheelers and other vehicles. Five heavy vehicle drivers were also caught.
In Cyberabad, 205 of the 237 offenders were riding two-wheeler riders, four were driving three-wheelers and 28 were four-wheeler drivers. The enforcement drives come amid the extension of bar timings, with Hyderabad Traffic Police stating that special drunk and drive checks will continue across the city.
Cyberabad Police said all the offenders would be produced before court and warned that those driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which provides for up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine.
In the last week, 309 drunk driving cases were disposed of by courts in Cyberabad. Five offenders were awarded fine and imprisonment, one was ordered to pay a fine and undertake social service, while 303 were fined.
