Nursing student killed, two classmates injured in accident near Coimbatore

A student of a private nursing college died and two of her classmates suffered injuries after being hit by a speeding truck on Neelambur bypass near Coimbatore - Pollachi Road junction on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as A. Anusree (21), a second-year student from Thoothukudi district. Her classmates D. Dhevika (21) from Thanjavur sustained a fracture on her right thigh and S. Sridharani (21) from Nagapattinam escaped with minor abrasions.

The injured students were admitted to a private hospital run by the nursing college’s management in Coimbatore city.

The police said that the accident took place around 1.30 p.m. when the three students were heading to the college from their hostel after lunch. As they crossed the bypass in front of the college, a truck heading towards Neelambur hit them.

Anusree suffered fatal injuries and died on the spot. The truck’s driver, M. Balraj (40) of Mavuthampathi, attempted to flee after the accident. But he fell and suffered an injury. The Madukkarai police arrested the driver and seized the truck. Further investigation is on.
