Myanmar tells ASEAN Aung San Suu Kyi will be looked after: envoy

Myanmar's ruling military council informed the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi is being properly looked after while in detention. The statement was reportedly delivered by a special envoy during recent diplomatic discussions aimed at addressing the country's ongoing political crisis.

Suu Kyi is currently serving a sentence of 27 years following a series of criminal charges. The original sentence was recently commuted by approximately one-third by the military authorities, although she remains in custody under various restrictions.

International observers and allies of the former Nobel Peace Prize winner have repeatedly claimed that the charges brought against her were politically motivated. Supporters argue the legal actions were fabricated specifically to exclude her from Myanmar's future political landscape and neutralize her influence.

The military government continues to face pressure from regional neighbors to implement a peace plan and allow humanitarian access. Source: Reuters.
