Incentives, warnings and assurances: how an Indian sailor transited Hormuz

An Indian sailor serving aboard an oil tanker recently detailed his experience navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor near Oman. The transit involved navigating various pressures, including sizable financial incentives offered by shipowners to encourage crew members to undertake the high-risk journey through contested waters.

During the passage, the crew encountered direct warnings from Iranian authorities who ordered the vessel to stop for inspection. However, these threats were countered by simultaneous encouragement from the U.S. Navy, which maintained communication with the tanker and urged the crew to proceed along their designated trade route.

The sailor noted that while the financial bonuses were a significant motivator, the geopolitical tension and the physical presence of naval assets created a high-stress environment for the merchant crew. Such incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges facing commercial shipping in the Middle East. Source: Indian seafarer interview.
