How India’s first educational computer arrived on a bullock cart
India's journey into computer science education began with the challenging delivery of its first major academic computer to IIT Kanpur. The machine's arrival involved a logistical relay via airplane, truck, and finally a bullock cart to navigate the local terrain.

The integration of computer science into the Indian educational system trace back to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. During the early 1960s, the institution acquired an IBM 1620, which served as a cornerstone for the nation's burgeoning technical curriculum.
Transporting the delicate and bulky equipment presented significant logistical hurdles at the time. After arriving in India by air and being moved by truck, the final leg of the journey to the campus was famously completed using a bullock cart to ensure the computer reached its destination.
This unconventional arrival significantly influenced the culture of the institute. Many of the original protocols established for the first computer lab have evolved into traditions that are still observed by students and faculty at the campus today.
