Authorities in Austria have begun the process of converting Adolf Hitler's birthplace in Braunau am Inn into a police station and human rights training center. The renovation aims to break the site's symbolic power and discourage it from becoming a destination for far-right extremists.
The Austrian government has commissioned a significant architectural transformation of the three-story building where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889. By redesigning the facade and repurposing the interior, officials intend to neutralize the property's historical notoriety and prevent neo-Nazi groups from using it as a pilgrimage site.
Construction began following a lengthy legal dispute over the property's expropriation and a subsequent architectural competition. Upon completion, the building will house the district police headquarters and a branch of the security academy, integrating law enforcement presence into the town center.
The redesign strategy focuses on erasing the building's aesthetic appeal to extremist groups while maintaining its historical context through an adjacent memorial stone.
