Gujarat’s Unjha cumin and fennel receive GI tag

The central government has awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) status to Unjha cumin and Unjha fennel, marking a significant milestone for the spice market in Gujarat. Known as a major trading hub for these spices, the Unjha region's products are now legally protected against imitation and unauthorized branding.

With these new additions, Gujarat continues to expand its portfolio of certified agricultural goods. The state already holds GI tags for several well-known products, including Gir Kesar mangoes and Bhalia wheat, which have helped local farmers gain better access to international markets.

Other products on the state's list of recognized goods include Kachchhi Kharek and Amalsadi chikoo. The GI tag ensures that only spices grown in the specific geographic area under prescribed standards can be sold under the Unjha name, according to the source.
