The final rites of Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, will be held on Monday (July 20, 2026) on private land at the foothills of Ranganatha Swamy Betta at Mavinakere in Holenarasipur taluk, Hassan district.

The Hassan district administration has begun preparations for the final rites, as a large number of people from Hassan and neighbouring districts expected to gather to pay their last respects and attend the funeral. The State Government has announced that the final rites will be conducted with full State honours.

K. S. Lathakumari, Deputy Commissioner of Hassan, told The Hindu that the family had decided to conduct the final rites at the foothills of Ranganatha Swamy Betta. The rituals are expected to begin on Monday (July 20, 2026) afternoon.

“The family owns private land at the location. We have already held meetings with the police and senior officials to make arrangements. The area has been barricaded, and arrangements have been made for parking vehicles. The police are making elaborate arrangements to manage the crowd and the dignitaries who are expected to attend. As many as five officials of SP rank will oversee the security arrangements,” she said.

The Ranganatha Swamy temple at Mavinakere is located close to Haradanahalli, the native place of Mr. Deve Gowda. Members of the Deve Gowda family have been devotees of the temple and have often visited it. Whenever family members contested elections, they traditionally offered special prayers at the temple before filing their nomination papers.

The mortal remains of Chennamma will be brought to Holenarasipur by Sunday (July 19, 2026) evening. The public will be allowed to pay their last respects to her at the residence of former Minister H. D. Revanna in Holenarasipur.
