‘Detailed study needed on Korapuzha dredging’
The Society for the Protection of Environment, Kerala (SPEK), has sought the constitution of a committee led by an environmental scientist specialised in marine ecology before resuming dredging in Korapuzha.
In a memorandum submitted to the Kozhikode Mayor and the District Collector on Saturday (July 18), SPEK president K. Koyatty and secretary K.K. Devadasan said that a local resident should be made part of the committee as well. They also expressed concerns over the reported move of the district administration to resume dredging in the river. They said in the memorandum that the dredging work earlier taken up was meant just to smuggle away sand, and that detailed studies would be required to understand its environmental impact.
